CHARACTER
Name: Alphonse Elric
Canon: Fullmetal Alchemist (2003)
OU/AU: OU
Gender: Male
Age: Physically and mentally 13.
Birthday: 3rd December (headcanon)
History: Here's a wiki page. Canon point is shortly before his first non-flashback appearance in Conqueror of Shamballa, when he's amnesiac and wandering the country by himself.
Personality:
In a cast brimming with traumatic pasts and badly-concealed issues, Alphonse manages to stand out by being, all things considered, pretty well-adjusted. More than that, he's genuinely sweet. He's thoughtful, amiable, highly empathetic and almost unfailingly polite. All of these traits, in conjunction with a natural aversion to conflict, make him a born mediator - not to mention an experienced one, given how used he is to intervening on his more hotheaded older brother's behalf. But that isn't to say he's a pushover; he does have a temper, even if it's slow-burning, and although he may not be inclined to fight on his own behalf except as a last resort, he'll readily rise to the defense of other people.
On the other hand, his niceness doesn't mean he has no flaws. In fact, the same characteristics that let him get along with others so easily can and do work against him. His capacity for empathy makes him trusting to a fault, and his dislike of conflict means he's willing to let the people he cares about get away with a lot, often in situations where he would have good reason to object. These tendencies don't generally make him gullible or naive as such - he's too intelligent for that - but they nevertheless leave him rather vulnerable to manipulation.
Manipulation of his actions or emotions, that is - his core beliefs are much less shakable. Al has a strongly codified moral sense, occasionally even to the point of being moralising. Given a choice, he'll always opt for what he thinks is right over what would benefit him personally. This makes him a foil to his brother in another sense; he doesn't just keep both of them together emotionally, he's also the one who makes sure neither of them loses sight of the bigger picture. Again, though, he can sometimes let his idealism get the better of him and neglect practical considerations entirely; this is a problem exacerbated by his amnesia, since he can't remember the consequences that similar decisions have had in the past.
In summary, he's a friendly, mature kid and remarkably well-grounded considering what he's lived through... but without his memories of the past five years, he is still just a kid, and that can be taken advantage of.
Abilities:
- Alchemy, and not as the Harry Potter world knows it. As long as he prepares an appropriate transmutation circle beforehand, usually just by drawing it, he can reshape or alter the composition of matter pretty much however he wants. The main limiting factor on this is the principle of equivalent exchange - no creating things out of nowhere. Unlike certain people he could name, he can't perform transmutations without a circle, but he can imitate the effect by wearing gloves with particular circles embroidered on the palms.
- Possessing inanimate objects by binding part of his soul to them. He does this using alchemy, but the ability is more or less unique to him; most people's souls can't leave their body that easily. As well as making independently-acting golems, he can also transfer his consciousness into another object temporarily and speak / see out of it, while his actual body appears to fall asleep.
- Some martial arts training.
- Can and will locate stray cats anywhere.
Best Subject: Transfiguration. He'd definitely have a rough start since most of it runs completely counter to the natural laws he's familiar with, but once he got over that, he could turn out to be pretty good. Unlike a lot of the other classes, it's a very precise, rules-driven subject, so the scientific approach he's familiar with from his alchemy would probably work well for it; at the same time, since it's not alchemy, there wouldn't be enough similarities in subject matter for the differences to really throw him. Plus, even if the rules aren't the same, his version of alchemy tends to look a lot like transfiguration anyway.
Requested House: Gryffindor

It's kind of a weird feeling, but... to be honest, I'm not sure what to think about this place.
I mean, on one hand, it's different. Really different. You know, I looked through most of the alchemy-related books they have in the library here, and I don't think any of them mentioned equivalent exchange. Not once. Isn't that weird? The weirdest part is, nobody needs to know about it, either - they can just bypass it! And it's so common, they teach kids to bypass it! Before I got here, I didn't even imagine a world like this could exist. I wasn't even sure there were any apart from ours. ...Although I'm glad I'm here now. I knew you were out there somewhere, but it's nice to be sure.
On the other hand - it's not as different as I thought it might be. Equivalent exchange wasn't ever totally true, even back home. You knew that, right? And the people here, they're exactly the same as the people anywhere. They feel the same things and have the same problems. If you just changed their clothes and names a little, you wouldn't be able to tell where they were from.
Maybe they're not that weird after all. Or maybe we're all weird, and we should recognise it. You probably know better than me.
I'd wonder if you felt this way too, back when you ended up wherever you went... but I guess there's not much point, is there, brother? I'll ask you about it when I see you again.
